Our dog had been throwing up and was diagnosed by Banfield as having a "sensitive stomach." They prescribed special food (which they also sell). Over several months, Quincy didn't get any better. He was going downhill and I felt he was gravely ill. I wanted to take him to another vet, but my wife had a health care contract with them. They said he needed a lot of testing, a radiograph, and a consultant to interpet it. They said we should upgrade his health care to include some of the tests. We did. We came back several hours later. They said they were concerned about some of the tests. We saw the X-ray which showed a lot of air in his stomach. But they didn't know what was wrong. It would have to wait for the consultant (extra cost not covered by the upgraded health policy). They sent him to VCA Animal Hospital to be observed overnight because of the air. On arriving at VCA, the vet took one look at Quincy and knew he was gravely ill. It took all of five minutes using ultrasound to diagnose a massive tumor filling the abdominal cavity. The vet said when the muscles and rest of the dog is wasted away, but one area is growing that is a red flag. He said Quincy was at "the end," and needed to be put down immediately. There was no choice, we didn't want him to suffer. I do not understand how Banfield could miss all this. Perhaps they should spend less time selling insurance, consultant fees, and pet food, and pay more attention to the animal itself.
